Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital Orthopedic Clinic Now Offering Arthroscopy Procedure for Knee Disorders

“Knee arthroscopy is a scope and is a safe and effective procedure that involves a surgeon investigating and correcting problems with a small tool called an arthroscope,” said Dr. Paul Frewin, head of orthopedics at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital. “It is a less invasive method of surgery used to both diagnose and treat issues in the joints.”

Dr. Frewin added knee arthroscopy surgery may be extremely helpful in diagnosing a range of problems including persistent joint pain and stiffness, damaged cartilage, floating fragments of bone or cartilage, and a buildup of fluid.

For the surgery, Dr. Frewin makes a small incision and then inserts a long, thin tool with a camera on the end. The camera shows images of the inside of the knee. He looks at the cartilage, bones, and soft tissues inside, which helps make a diagnosis of the injury.

Although everyone responds differently to surgery, since the procedure requires only a few small stitches, patients tend to recover quicker with less pain than with traditional, open knee surgery. Another benefit is a lower risk of infection.

Lisa Lochner, president of Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, believes this service is greatly needed in Sullivan. “We’re really excited to offer knee arthroscopy as part of our comprehensive orthopedic services. Some of our community members suffer from debilitating knee pain that reduces their quality of life. Our goal is to help those who are suffering by alleviating pain and restoring mobility.”

Seeking a More Positive Prenatal Experience for Second, Third Pregnancies: Patient is Grateful to Find Dr. Rembecki and Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital

When Hannah Verkamp, 26, of Rolla, Mo., gave birth to her first baby nearly seven years ago, it wasn’t exactly the experience she hoped it would be. First, she didn’t have a good connection with her Ob/Gyn. She also developed preeclampsia – a prenatal complication marked by high blood pressure – which forced her to deliver her son early at just 36 weeks. So, when she learned she was expecting her second baby, Verkamp decided to go another route: she wanted to find a new Ob/Gyn and hospital.
