Should I call my primary care provider or go to the emergency room?

Your health care team at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital knows that illness and injuries don’t follow a schedule. When faced with a situation that requires same-day care, deciding where to get care is the last thing you want to worry about.

That’s why BJC HealthCare wants you to be as informed as possible about your medical choices. Understanding your options now can make decisions easier when you need care down the road.

Know Your Choices

Primary Care: Your primary care provider is a great place to start when you are sick or hurt. They know your health history, including any underlying conditions you may have, so they can make informed choices about your treatment and order any necessary tests.

Need a provider? To speak with one of our helpful referral specialists, call 573-468-1999, or toll-free 800-392-0936, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. We can help find the right physician for you and your insurance. They can even make the appointment for you and call you back with the appointment time.

Weekend Clinic: If you find yourself with a fever, sinus infection, minor injury or other common illness, our non-emergency room setting offers patients, one-year and older, basic, quality medical care without the waiting time and higher costs associated with an ER visit.

We accept most insurance plans with the standard office visit co-pay. Open Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m.-4 p.m., walk-ins only.

Emergency Room: If you believe your condition is severe or life-threatening, go to your nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1. The Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital Emergency Room is well-equipped to handle injuries, chest pain, stroke symptoms and other care needs for adults and children.

As part of BJC Healthcare, we partner with the top medical centers in the region and have access to helicopter transportation for patients needing a higher level of care.

Be Prepared

Building a relationship with your primary care doctor who knows your health history is equally important – especially in those moments when you need help making the best decision on where to get same-day care. If you don’t already have a primary care doctor, visit our website to find a doctor.

It’s always a good idea to know where the closest emergency department and convenient care centers are located. That way, when you need walk-in care, you’ll already know where to go.

You should also know what is covered by your health insurance plan. If you have questions about what is covered or your financial responsibility under your health insurance plan, please contact your health insurer.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery at Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital Helped Relieve Years of Chronic Pain for Bourbon, Mo. Resident

Our knees tend to show more wear and tear as we age, including soreness, aching, and general discomfort from simple daily movements like walking, exercising, and even standing. One of the common underlying causes of knee pain is osteoarthritis, which occurs as the cartilage in the joint deteriorates causing inflammation. Bourbon resident Mike Johnson, 52, had been battling chronic knee pain in his right knee due to osteoarthritis since around age 40. He had resorted to receiving cortisone injections while under the care of an orthopedic specialist in Washington, Mo., which helped for a few years.
