Local Students Explore Health Care Careers During BJC’s Adventures in HealthCare Camp

Children of Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital employees came together for the BJC Adventures in HealthCare Camp, July 15-19. Hosted by BJC School Outreach and Youth Development and Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital team members, the camp gave four seventh and eighth graders a behind-the-scene glimpse into health care careers.

“Our team members created wonderful, transformative experiences for our young guests,” said Kathleen Reed, director of human resources. “Hosting this camp was an opportunity to showcase our health care superheroes and ignite a passion within the campers to possibly one day follow in their footsteps.”

Adventures in HealthCare campers learned about a variety of departments such as Cardiac Rehab, Therapy and Wellness Center, Emergency Medical Services, Radiology, Wound Care and more.

  • “We learned a lot and were given many opportunities to be hands on,” said Paisley Hill, 11-year-old daughter of Brittany Hill, RN, Emergency Room. “It was a fun and educational camp.”
  • “I learned that health care can be very complex,” said Aubrey Reed, 12-year-old daughter of Jessica Reed, RN, Occupational Health. “My favorite part of the camp was the Therapy and Wellness Center. We learned about types of injuries and how the hospital helps patients recover from them. I am thankful for Kathy Reed and Jennifer Brooks for putting together a health care camp where I could learn and participate.”
  • “I really enjoyed my teachers and I had so much fun learning about jobs within the hospital,” said Chelsey Price, 11-year-old daughter of Felecia Price, LPN, Medical Clinic. “The experience opened my eyes to things I wouldn't have known."
  • “The camp taught me new aspects of health care that I didn’t know before. I really enjoyed the experience,” said Brady Bliss, 13-year-old son of Nichole Bliss, Emergency Department manager.

The health care camp was a resounding success, not only in terms of the experiences provided to the children, but also in fostering a sense of community and promoting health awareness.
